There Is No Single Off Season

When we asked Grant what the off-season guest looks like, he pushed back on the question.

"That question is almost too generalized. There are three or four different off seasons down here. You have September and October, which is borderline summer and fall. You have real fall. You have the dead of winter. You have early spring. Then you have May and June, which is late spring and early summer."

A lot of people talk about Ocean City's off season like it is one long quiet stretch after Labor Day. It is not. September does not feel like January. November does not feel like March. A Winterfest weekend does not feel like a random Tuesday in February. And early April, when restaurants start reopening and the light changes, is its own thing entirely.

That is why this guide is not just another list of "things to do in Ocean City in winter."

The better question is: which off season do you want?

Ocean City has changed a lot in the last twenty to thirty years, and faster in the last ten. Grant's framing is simple: Ocean City is essentially a year-round town now, and it was not one two decades ago. The Town deserves real credit for bringing events into the calendar and helping extend the season beyond the old Memorial Day-to-Labor Day window.

But the quiet months still have their own rhythm.

You just need to know which one you are booking.

The Four Versions of Ocean City's Off Season

Second Season: September and October

Locals call it Second Season, and a lot of us think it is the best time of year here.

The ocean has had all summer to warm up. The beach is easier to enjoy. The town is still active. Restaurants are open. Events still bring people in. The weather can feel like summer without the full summer crowd.

Grant's line was simple: if the weather is good, these are some of his favorite months at the beach.

Second Season is not an empty Ocean City. It's a quieter one.

That's the difference.

Real Fall: November Into December

This is sweatshirt weather on the beach, and if you like that kind of thing, it is not a compromise from summer, it's the reason you came.

Assateague, the Boardwalk, parks, trails, Berlin, West Ocean City, and long outdoor walks are all better when you are not sharing them with peak-season crowds. Some years the mild weather runs deep into December. We've had Christmas Day beach weather before, not as a promise, just as a very Ocean City thing that happens once in a while and makes everyone feel like they got away with something.

November and December also bring Winterfest, holiday weekends, Christmas events in Berlin, off-season restaurant specials, and the kind of quieter trip people often say they wish they had tried sooner.

The Depth of Winter: January and February

January and February are the quietest stretch.

This is when Ocean City belongs mostly to the people who live here. For the right visitor, that is exactly the appeal.

There is no pretending this is July. The rides are not running. The beach shops are mostly closed. A lot of seasonal businesses are taking their break. Some restaurants cut back hours. Some close for a few weeks.

But the beach is still there. The Boardwalk is still there. The restaurants that stay open are easier to get into. Parking stops being a topic. The buildings are quieter. The pace drops. You can come down, settle in, eat well, walk outside, and feel like you found the version of Ocean City most summer visitors never see.

Early Spring: March and April

Early spring is the town waking back up.

Restaurants start reopening. More events begin to appear. Golf gets easier to plan. The Boardwalk starts to feel more active. The days get longer. The rates usually have not fully caught up yet.

March and April are not summer, but they are not deep winter either. They are the ramp back in.

For visitors who want value, fewer people, and a little more movement than January or February, early spring can be one of the smartest times to come.

What Actually Stays Open, and What Closes

This is the question guests ask most, and the honest answer has two halves.

What largely closes

The most seasonal Boardwalk businesses largely close in winter. That means many of the T-shirt shops, amusement rides, and classic summer Boardwalk businesses take a break.

Grant's estimate is that roughly nine in ten Boardwalk shops shut for the winter. That is not meant as a complaint. It is just the reality of a business model built around the busiest part of the year.

If the Boardwalk arcade-and-rides experience is the whole point of your trip, the depth of winter is probably not your trip.

What stays open

A lot more than first-time off-season visitors expect.

Many year-round restaurants stay open. The places that take food seriously tend to stay open longest, or run year-round with adjusted hours. Liquid Assets and Longboard Cafe were two Grant named specifically. North Ocean City, Midtown, West Ocean City, Berlin, Bishopville, and Fenwick all have restaurants that keep serving when the seasonal spots slow down.

Indoor attractions, outlets, the Convention Center, the Life-Saving Station Museum, breweries, distilleries, wineries, parks, trails, golf courses, and the beach itself all keep the quiet months from feeling empty.

What is worth understanding, rather than resenting, is that many local businesses have been running hard for 100, 120, or 150 days straight. Some take a month off. Some take a couple of weeks. Some cut back to four days a week, and Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday are common closure days.

The practical rule: call before you drive somewhere in January.

Hours in the off season are real, but they move. A two-minute phone call saves a wasted trip.

The off-season value tip most visitors miss

This is Grant's best value tip for the quiet months:

"In the off season and the shoulder season, a lot of guests do not know about all the local and weekly specials these restaurants run. Look online, Google it, there is usually a list. Ask our team. There are great off-season specials to be had in this town, at some of the best restaurants, and there is an opportunity almost every day of the week."

That is one of the quiet-season secrets.

Ocean City does not just get easier in the off season. It can get more affordable in ways visitors miss if they only compare rental rates.

Winterfest of Lights

Winterfest of Lights runs at Northside Park, 200 125th Street, from November 19, 2026 through January 2, 2027.

Hours are listed as 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM. As always, check the official Winterfest page before you go for current dates, tickets, weather updates, special nights, and any schedule changes.

Northside Park sits on the bay, and Winterfest turns it into a walk-through holiday lights experience with animated displays, music, photo opportunities, and a 50-foot tree.

Grant has watched this one from the beginning:

"My dad and I were there the very first year it was open, helping with it. Dad was very involved behind the scenes with the town and the rec department. Watching it evolve to what it is now, I cannot compliment the city enough. It brings a lot of people to town and it is a great family atmosphere. People do it year after year."

The event has moved through different formats over the years, from tram rides to a walk-through experience. For 2026, the Town's Winterfest programming includes Enchanted Evenings carriage rides on select dates, Pet-Friendly Wednesdays, and special holiday-season programming.

Two things are worth knowing.

First, Winterfest is better when you make a night of it. North Ocean City restaurants, the Carousel ice rink, and the quieter pace of that end of town all pair well with the event.

Second, do not rely on memory from a previous year. Winterfest details change. Check the current schedule and plan around the actual night you are going.

Outdoor Things to Do in the Quiet Months

This is the part guests underrate most.

Grant's advice when asked what a first off-season weekend should look like was simple: tailor it to who you are and get outside.

Assateague Island

Assateague is one of the best off-season trips near Ocean City.

The wild horses, quiet beaches, birdwatching, trails, dunes, and bay side of the island all feel different when summer crowds are gone. Grant's point was that a lot of people have visited Ocean City many times and only experienced Assateague with a beach chair and umbrella.

There is much more to it than that.

Rackliffe House

Rackliffe House, near Assateague, is a historic stop many visitors have never heard of.

It is not a simple "show up any winter day" attraction, so check current tour access, seasonal hours, and events before you plan around it. But if you like local history, Assateague-area stops, and quieter off-season exploring, it belongs on the list.

West Ocean City pedestrian and bike path

The West Ocean City pedestrian and bike path gives visitors another way to get outside without making the beach the whole plan.

It is especially useful in the quiet months because you can enjoy the area without summer traffic and heat. For active visitors, it is a good add-on to an Assateague, West Ocean City, or Berlin day.

The Boardwalk

The Boardwalk in winter is not about rides and arcades.

It is about the walk.

With the crowds gone, the ocean on one side and the quiet buildings on the other, the Boardwalk becomes one of the best simple off-season experiences in town. Walk it. Bike it during permitted hours. Get coffee. Wear a sweatshirt. Let it be quiet.

That is the whole point.

Golf

Golf is one of the better off-season values around Ocean City.

Eagle's Landing, Lighthouse Sound, and GlenRiddle's Man O'War and War Admiral courses all become more accessible in the cooler months, and green fees often come down compared with peak season.

Weather decides the day, but off-season golf is absolutely part of the trip for a lot of visitors.

Indoor Things to Do When the Weather Turns

Not every day cooperates.

That is fine.

Ocean City has enough indoor options to save a cold, windy, or rainy day.

• Old Pro Golf has indoor mini golf options in Ocean City.
• Alley Oops, Game World, Fun City, arcades, and laser tag give families indoor choices.
• Captive Escape Rooms has multiple games across two locations.
• The Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum at the south end of the Boardwalk is open year-round.
• Tanger Outlets in West Ocean City is much easier without summer crowds.
• The Roland E. Powell Convention Center carries concerts, comedy, trade shows, and seasonal events through the quieter months.
• Breweries, distilleries, and wineries make good cold-weather stops.
• Carousel ice skating is a classic North Ocean City option, but check current hours and closures before you go.

For breweries and day trips, Berlin gives you Berlin Beer Company, Burley Oak, and Sinepuxent Brewing nearby. Windmill Creek Vineyard and Winery in Berlin has also offered cold-weather outdoor setups like igloo-style tents.

The point is not to over-schedule the trip.

It is to know you have options if the wind decides it is in charge.

Berlin, Assateague, and Short Drives

Grant raised Berlin unprompted, twice, in two different interview segments:

"So many people come to Ocean City in the off seasons. How awesome is it in the fall and the off season to go to Berlin? To walk it, visit the restaurants, visit the shops, do any of their activities and attractions. The Christmas parade."

Berlin is about fifteen minutes west of Ocean City. It is a historic small town with restaurants, shops, galleries, breweries, and events, and it is often at its best when Ocean City is quieter.

The Christmas parade is worth planning around if that is your kind of weekend.

West Ocean City, Bishopville, Fenwick, and Assateague are all inside the same short-drive radius, and that matters in the off season. When some island businesses take a break, the surrounding towns help fill out the trip.

That is one of the reasons off-season Ocean City works better than some visitors expect.

You are not limited to the beach.

Dogs Are Back on the Beach

Dogs are permitted on the Ocean City beach and Boardwalk between October 1 and April 30. From May 1 through September 30, they are not allowed on either.

Leashes are required, and cleanup is the owner's responsibility.

This is one of the real arguments for an off-season trip, and it is a genuine ritual for our team:

"We take our dog to the beach and the Boardwalk every single weekend we can once October hits. It is a family trip, a family weekend, a family walk in the morning. We stop and get crepes. He is part of the family, so he comes."

One caution: pet-friendly rentals in Ocean City are genuinely scarce.

The fact that the beach reopens to dogs does not mean rentals are easy to find. Confirm in writing that the property you are booking accepts pets before you send any money.

If your dog is part of the trip, October through April is the window, but the rental search still needs to start early.

What an Off-Season Stay Actually Feels Like

Low stress. Low anxiety. Easy. Simple. Laid back.

A quiet beach town.

Parking stops being a problem. Restaurant waits shrink or disappear. The buildings are quieter. The elevator is easier. The beach in front of your rental feels like it belongs to the people who bothered to show up.

The part that surprises people is the social side.

Grant put it this way: yes, it is locals' time, but you can be one of the locals rather than one of a mass of visitors. The off-season specials, the restaurants, the shopping, the local boutiques, the quiet Boardwalk, the coffee stops, the winter beach walk. You can hang out with the locals and be local for a weekend.

That is the version of Ocean City most summer guests never really meet.

And once people understand it, they often come back.

How to Plan an Off-Season Weekend

If you have one free off-season weekend and you have never seen Ocean City outside the summer, here is the shape of it.

Do not build it around an event unless you want the event

Oceans Calling, Country Calling, Winterfest, St. Patrick's Day weekend, and other major events are their own trips with their own crowds.

That is not bad.

It just means an event weekend and a quiet weekend are two different things. Pick the one you actually want.

Do build it around the outdoors if the weather cooperates

Grant's advice was to tailor it to who you are and get outside.

Assateague. The Boardwalk. The beach in a sweatshirt. A West Ocean City walk or bike ride. Golf. Berlin. A long lunch. A cold-weather sunset.

Do not overthink it.

Do make a restaurant plan

Off-season restaurant hours change. Some restaurants close Monday through Wednesday. Some take short breaks. Some run specials you will be mad you missed.

Pick a few options and check the hours before you go.
