We can instantly save you about 14% on your Ocean City vacation rental... and the example below shows you we're not kidding.
On September 20, we compared quotes for the exact same OC condo, for the exact same October week. The difference between the two quotes was simple. The first scenario was done booking through Vrbo and the second scenario was done "booking direct" with our team at Central Reservations. The direct quote was about 14% lower.
Everything else was exactly the same... Same condo. Same dates. About 14% of the price left in your vacation budget.
That's a good place to start. But there's more you can do before booking your next trip to the beach. Saving money on an Ocean City vacation is as quick as following a few simple steps. The most important step is to check for unnecessary line-items and add-ons. And don't pay for unnecessarily high booking fees.
The short answer: Compare your final direct-booking price, choose a rental that fits your group's actual needs, consider flexible dates, and plan your rewards and everyday expenses before arriving. Start with the total vacation budget, then decide where your money will make the biggest difference.
What booking direct saved on one Ocean City rental
Here's the comparison from our September 20, 2026 quote records: a three-bedroom condo at Gateway Grand, October 10 to 17, 2026, seven nights and two guests.
| Booking option | Savings compared with Vrbo |
|---|---|
| Vrbo | Baseline |
| Central Reservations direct, without credit-card surcharge | About 14% |
| Central Reservations direct, paid entirely by credit card | About 12% |
The direct quote included the rental rate, registration and parking, processing, a damage waiver and taxes. Central Reservations charges a 3% surcharge on credit-card payments and does not surcharge debit-card payments. See our payment and rental policies for details.
Now let's be clear: this is one property and one week, quoted on a specific date. It isn't a promise that every reservation will save 14%, and it isn't a current offer for that stay. Prices, availability and booking terms can change.
It does show why checking matters. In this example, booking direct saved approximately 14% before a credit-card surcharge, without changing the condo or shortening the vacation.
What changes when you book direct
A marketplace such as Vrbo helps you discover properties and make reservations. But they charge you a premium fee for doing so. Many times that property is managed by a local rental management company, like ours at Central Reservations. Even if you book on Vrbo, our local team manages the process, and you'll end up working directly with us anyway.
Yes, Vrbo provides platform services and booking protections (subject to its terms). But those minimal services shouldn't be confused with the local service involved in managing the property you're booking. For the extra 14% we suggest you compare the platform's benefits with the direct price and make an informed decision.
When you book directly with Central Reservations, you avoid Vrbo's additional marketplace service fee. But you do need to understand that applicable property charges, taxes and company fees still apply. All of which you'd still be paying if you booked through Vrbo.
That distinction matters: "book direct" doesn't mean "no fees anywhere." It does mean you'll be saving a lot of money on unnecessary "Booking Fees" from third-party platforms, like Vrbo.
How to find out who manages a Vrbo listing
Here's how to check, using a Gateway Grand condo we manage as the example.
- Find the host's name. On the Vrbo listing, scroll down to "About the host." For this condo, Vrbo lists the host as Central Reservations OC, MD Vacation Rentals. Vrbo's checkout page spells it out: "You'll be charged separately by Vrbo for the service fee and by Central Reservations OC, MD Vacation Rentals, the host, for the booking amount."
- Look for the unit number in the listing title. This one reads "New for 2022! Gateway Grand 609 offers Oceanfront Luxury," so you're looking for unit 609 in the Gateway Grand building. Search for it on the manager's own website. On ours, it's Gateway Grand 609.
- No unit number in the title? Search the rental manager's website for the same building and the same dates, then match the listing by its photos. The same rooms, furniture and views will show up on both sites.
- Compare the final totals for the same dates and guest count, using the checklist below.

Compare these before you book
Two prices only tell you something useful when you know what each one covers. Before choosing, check:
- The exact property: Match the unit, not just the building.
- The stay: Use identical dates, nights and guest counts.
- The final total: Include required charges, taxes and payment surcharges.
- Damage arrangements: Distinguish a nonrefundable waiver from a refundable deposit.
- Cancellation terms: Check deadlines, refund amounts and treatment of fees.
- Included items: Confirm parking, linens and any amenities you expect to use.
If you've found a CR property on a marketplace, ask our team to quote that same property for the same dates. Compare the full amounts and terms before making your reservation.
Rent the property you will actually use
An extra bedroom sounds appealing. So does an oceanfront balcony. But whether either one is worth paying more for depends on your vacation.
If you plan to spend most of your day on the beach and your evenings out, an oceanblock condo might meet your needs beautifully. Compare the actual beach access and walking route, then decide what the oceanfront view is worth to you. For someone who plans to spend hours on the balcony, it may be worth every dollar.
The same thinking applies to size. Grant Fritschle, one of Central Reservations' owners, sees this firsthand with his own updated two-bedroom condo, which accommodates six. He's heard from guests who were happy they chose a smaller property with more updates and upgrades instead of paying for another bedroom.
The lesson is useful: a property can be smaller and still be the better vacation choice. Updated interiors, comfortable furnishings and a layout that works for your group may contribute more to the stay than additional space.
Look beyond the bedroom count. Check the actual beds, privacy, bathrooms and permitted occupancy. A two-bedroom only represents good value if everyone will be comfortable using it.
What most guests get wrong
They compare the nightly price before deciding what will actually make their vacation better.
A lower rate can lose some of its appeal if you're adding parking, renting linens or driving every time you want to do something. A slightly more expensive property may include features that save money elsewhere.
Before booking, work through the expenses that are easy to overlook:
- Parking: How many vehicles are included, and what will you do with an extra car?
- Cleaning: Are you (the Guest) being charged for the property cleaning?
- Meals: Would breakfast and lunch in the condo leave you with more room for the dinner reservations you've been wanting to make?
- Amenities: Will you use the pool or other facilities enough to justify any price difference?
- Location: Can you walk to the places you'll visit most, or should you budget for transportation?
Check the individual listing and our guest FAQs. Properties differ, and the details can change what looks like the better deal.
Give your dates some flexibility
If your schedule allows it, ask us to compare nearby weeks or different arrival days. Even a small change can open up a different set of properties and prices.
Late August and the fall are worth exploring alongside peak-summer dates. Our guide to the cheapest times to visit Ocean City can help you narrow the options. Just remember that major events can create high-demand weekends outside summer, too.
We also encourage guests to check the week surrounding July Fourth rather than automatically ruling it out. In our experience, opportunities can appear around the holiday when shorter visits leave gaps in the calendar. Treat that as a week to investigate, not a guaranteed bargain.
A shorter stay can help fit a trip into your budget, depending on the property's minimum stay. But several separate getaways aren't automatically cheaper than one week. Repeated per-reservation charges and travel costs can add up.
Ocean City remains a drive-to beach destination for many of our guests. Include fuel, tolls and parking when comparing one longer visit with several shorter trips.
Should you book early or wait for a discount
That depends on how much flexibility you have.
If you need a particular building, sleeping arrangement, accessible feature or school-vacation week, booking earlier gives you more opportunity to find the right fit. Waiting can narrow those choices, even if some remaining properties eventually reduce their rates.
If you're flexible about dates and location, a later opening may work well. The trade-off is that you'll be choosing from what's still available.
Our advice is straightforward: tell us what's essential and what you can change. We can help you evaluate current options without assuming that "early" or "last minute" is always the cheapest answer.
Use your free vacation rewards
Direct-booking guests can select up to 10 free vacation rewards per reservation through the Central Reservations rewards program. Order them before arrival, and your vouchers will be provided at the rental office when you check in.
The selection includes restaurant and activity offers, with availability depending on your travel dates. Read each offer: a free voucher may provide a discount with a minimum purchase, rather than an entirely free meal or activity.
Choose rewards for things you already want to do. That's where they can help your budget. Spending extra just to redeem an offer isn't much of a saving.
Plan a few days that cost less
You don't need a paid attraction on every day of the itinerary. Leave room for time on the beach, a Boardwalk stroll or a simple evening together back at the condo.
Assateague is another outing we regularly encourage guests to consider. We've spoken with longtime Ocean City visitors who finally went and wondered why they hadn't done it sooner. It deserves a place in the low-cost category, though, rather than being described as universally free.
The National Park Service currently lists a $25 private-vehicle entrance pass valid for seven days at Assateague Island National Seashore. Check the current entrance fees before going; the neighboring state park has separate admission arrangements.
For other outings, review the Ocean City events calendar and check admission, parking and seasonal schedules. Our Second Season guide can also help you decide whether a fall trip suits your plans.
Set your budget first and let us help
Start with the total amount you're comfortable spending. Set aside money for travel, meals and activities, then work out what's available for the rental.
You don't have to figure out every property yourself. Call Central Reservations at 410-723-4111 or email info@centraloc.com with four things:
- Your lodging budget, including required fees and taxes.
- Your preferred dates and any flexibility.
- The number of guests and sleeping arrangements you need.
- Your must-haves, such as beach proximity, a pool, an elevator or parking.
That gives our team something useful to work with. We can help you compare available options and understand where a different date, location or layout might make your budget go further.
Many returning guests already know their priorities. They know which features they use, where they're willing to compromise and which expenses are worth planning ahead. You can make those same decisions before your first stay.
Keep the parts of the vacation you care about. Let's find the places where you can spend less.
Frequently asked questions
Can booking direct really save about 14%
It did in our September 20, 2026 comparison. For the same Gateway Grand condo and October 10 to 17 stay, the direct quote was about 14% below Vrbo before a credit-card surcharge, or about 12% lower when paid entirely by credit card. Savings vary by reservation.
Does booking direct mean there are no fees
No. Direct booking avoids the additional marketplace service fee, but rental charges, taxes and applicable CR or property fees remain. Compare the final total and payment terms.
Is a smaller vacation rental always a better value
Only if it meets your needs. An updated two-bedroom can be a better choice than a larger property when the beds, bathrooms, privacy and permitted occupancy work for your group. Don't sacrifice essential comfort simply to reduce the bedroom count.
What is the cheapest time to visit Ocean City
Winter is worth checking if your priority is lodging cost and you're comfortable with seasonal limitations. For a trip closer to the summer beach experience, compare late-August and fall dates. Event weekends, property features and availability can affect prices in any season.
Should I wait until the last minute to book
Waiting can work for flexible travelers, but it can reduce your choices. If you need specific dates, a particular building or a hard-to-find feature, compare available options early rather than assuming a last-minute discount will produce the best fit.
How we know this
This guide draws on Central Reservations' work with guests and vacation rental owners in Ocean City and West Ocean City, along with Grant Fritschle's firsthand property experience. The booking comparison uses figures recorded by CR on September 20, 2026, for the same property, dates and guest count; it compares quoted totals rather than assigning the full difference to a single fee or tax.
Payment policies, rewards instructions and park entrance information were checked against their published sources on October 1, 2026. Rates, availability and individual booking terms can change.
