Short Answer
Winter is the "cheapest" time to visit Ocean City, but spring and fall are often the "best" value.
Rates drop outside the peak summer weeks, midweek stays are often less expensive than weekends, and the shoulder seasons give you more of Ocean City for less money without requiring you to visit in the middle of January.
But timing is only part of the equation. One of the largest avoidable costs can be the way you book. Compare the final, all-in price of the property, not just the advertised nightly rate, and look at booking fees, cancellation terms, payment-method charges, and rewards before deciding where to reserve. These can result in big savings.

Is Ocean City Still Affordable?
Has Ocean City gotten more expensive?
Yes.... But so has almost everything else.
Grant has heard some version of this conversation for most of his life:
"I can remember being a child forty years ago and my dad coming home upset because people were saying OC was too expensive. That has always been there and unfortunately it always will be.... Because people compare it to what they remember..... and things were almost always less expensive in the past. But that doesn't mean there aren't smart ways to save when you book a beach vacation for next year.."
Grant Fritschle, Owner and Broker, Central Reservations
Ocean City remains a drive-to beach destination with a wide range of lodging choices, which gives guests more ways to control the total cost of a trip.
For families coming from Maryland, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey, and much of the Mid-Atlantic, the vacation does not necessarily begin with (4) airline tickets and a rental car. Once you arrive, you have a wide variety of lodging locations and options. You can choose between oceanfront, ocean block, bayside, larger resort buildings, smaller condos, and different sections of town at dramatically different price points.
The biggest mistake is when travelers assume the highly-rate for lodging determines if the entire vacation was 'worth it' or 'too expensive'. That's just not the case.
It's certainly a contributing factor. But it's not the whole picture.
Cheapest Time to Visit Ocean City, Season by Season
When is the cheapest time to visit Ocean City MD?
Winter is clearly the cheapest, by a wide margin.
Spring and fall usually cost less, and offer great deals in comparison to summer. These shoulder seasons give you more restaurants, events, attractions, and warm-weather options than winter, and better rates than summer. And yes, summer is our peak season....but even summer has meaningful price differences depending on the week, the property, and whether you stay midweek or over a weekend.
Here is the practical breakdown.
Winter: January Through Early March
If your only goal is the lowest rental price, this is usually the answer.
The town is at its quietest. Many year-round restaurants remain open, the beach and Boardwalk are still there, parking is easy, and there are virtually no summer crowds.
Winterfest now extends into early January, but after the holiday period Ocean City becomes the version of town most summer visitors never see.
If the point of your trip is to relax somewhere near the ocean at the lowest possible lodging cost, winter is hard to beat.
Spring: March Through May
Spring is where value starts getting interesting.
Restaurants and attractions reopen, the weather improves, golf gets easier to plan, events return, and rental prices have usually not reached summer levels.
You give up guaranteed beach weather, but you also give up a lot of the lines, restaurant waits, traffic, and peak-season pricing.
For many couples and families who do not need a July beach week, spring is a very good trade.
Summer: June Through August
This is the full Ocean City experience, and it usually has the highest prices.
But "summer" isn't one price.
Different weeks carry different demand. A Monday-through-Thursday stay may price differently than a weekend-heavy stay. Last-minute openings can create legitimate deals. And a bayside or ocean-block property can sometimes save hundreds compared with direct oceanfront while keeping you only a short walk from the beach.
Summer gives you the widest choice of activities.
It also gives you the widest opportunity to overspend if you do not compare carefully.
Fall: September Through November
Locals call September and October Second Season, and many of us think it is the best time of year here.
The ocean has had all summer to warm up. Humidity usually eases. Restaurants and attractions remain active. Events continue. Rental rates begin coming down from peak summer.
That is why fall is often less about being the cheapest and more about being the best value.
You can spend less without feeling like you traded away the Ocean City experience.
Cheapest Versus Best Value
These are not the same question.....The cheapest date on the calendar is likely somewhere in the middle of winter. That does not automatically make it the trip you want.
| If your priority is... | Best timing to consider |
|---|---|
| Absolute lowest rental rate | January through early March |
| Best balance of price and experience | Spring and fall |
| Warm water and Second Season | September and early October |
| Full summer experience | June through August |
| Lower summer pricing with flexibility | Midweek or last-minute openings |
| Best property and week selection for next summer | Book when calendars open in the fall |
Grant's answer on value came in two parts:
"There are two different types. One is the shoulder seasons. If it is a beautiful spring week or weekend, or a beautiful fall week or weekend, you cannot beat the quality of the place you are going to get and the atmosphere in town for the price you are going to get it at.
And then even in peak season, a lot of people are surprised you can still get great deals, if you are okay with a last-minute getaway. You might not have the selection you want, but there are still places that offer last-minute deals and it is fantastic."
Grant Fritschle, Owner and Broker, Central Reservations
If you can decide late and live with less choice, last-minute summer deals exist. If you are a planner, have a specific week, need a certain building, want several bedrooms, or are traveling with a larger group, betting your vacation on a last-minute opening probably does not make sense.
If that's the case, we recommend you find value in a shoulder-season stay instead.
One seasonal trick that can save real money
Think about how you will actually use the property.
In July, if you plan to spend eight hours a day on the beach, paying more for oceanfront or ocean block can be worth every dollar.
In October, you may walk the beach for an hour, spend more time at restaurants, visit Berlin or Assateague, go to an event, or sit on the balcony in a sweatshirt.
That can change the value equation.
Bayside may suddenly make more sense. So might a building with an indoor pool or better amenities instead of direct oceanfront.
Do not pay July prices for a feature you will use like it is October.
The Biggest Saving May Have Nothing to Do With Timing
What is one of the best ways to save money on an Ocean City rental?
Check the direct price before you book through a marketplace.
Grant's number-one tip is simple:
"The number one thing, the number one tip and top money saver, is to make sure you are booking direct. Even if you do your research and find the property on Vrbo or Airbnb, if you can book direct you are going to save a lot. Most guests do not realize how much of a fee those syndicates are charging them."
Grant Fritschle, Owner and Broker, Central Reservations
Vrbo confirms that travelers pay a service fee calculated as a percentage of the reservation amount and that the percentage varies by reservation.
Industry vacation-rental sources commonly cite a rough guideline of approximately 6% to 15% of the reservation subtotal.
That range should be treated exactly as that: a guideline.
Vrbo itself does not currently publish a fixed 6% to 15% rate table, and the exact fee depends on the reservation. The number that matters is the service fee shown in the price breakdown for the specific property and dates you are considering.
For an Ocean City weekend or shorter stay, even a percentage-based fee can become a meaningful dollar amount.
That is why we keep coming back to the same advice:
Compare the final total.
Not the nightly rate.
What the difference actually looked like
Here is one real example, same property and same dates, both quoted on September 20, 2026: a three-bedroom condo at Gateway Grand, October 10 to 17, 2026, seven nights, two guests.
| Line item | Booked on Vrbo | Booked direct with us |
|---|---|---|
| Rental amount shown | $3,142.12, displayed as $448.87 x 7 nights | $2,404.08 |
| Platform service fee | $381.00, folded into the rental amount above | None |
| Property charges listed separately | None shown separately | $151.00 building registration and parking, $49.00 processing fee |
| Damage waiver | Not shown separately | $89.00, or a $500 refundable deposit instead |
| State and county taxes | $317.88 | $272.16 |
| Total as quoted | $3,460.00 | $2,965.24 |
| Paying by credit card adds 3% | Not applicable | $3,054.20. Debit has no surcharge |
Booking the same week direct came to $494.76 less, roughly 14 percent of the marketplace total, or $405.80 less if you pay the direct booking by credit card.
Two honest notes about that table. Vrbo folds property charges into the nightly figure it advertises, so the middle rows do not line up item for item, which is the whole reason we keep saying to compare final totals. And the taxes differ because the marketplace fee is itself taxable, so a larger fee also means a larger tax bill on the same week in the same condo.
Your property, your dates, and your fees will not match this example. Run the comparison on the week you actually want.
How to Find the Host and Check the Direct Price
This was Grant's own tip, and it is one of the easiest things a traveler can do before booking.
If you find a vacation rental you like on Vrbo or another marketplace, look at who manages it.
If the host is a professional vacation-rental company, there is a good chance that company also has its own website.
The process is simple:
- Find the host or property-manager name on the listing, normally towards the bottom of the page.
- Search that exact company name.
- Go to the company's verified website.
- Find the same property and dates.
- Compare the final all-in total.
If Central Reservations is shown as the manager, you can search the property on CentralOC.com and compare the direct total before booking.
That does not mean every direct booking everywhere is automatically cheaper. It means it is worth checking.
And compare the exact same dates, property, cancellation terms, and inclusions.
This is intentionally the short version. Our upcoming How to Save Money on Your Ocean City Vacation guide will go deeper into booking channels, direct-price comparisons, fees, and how to verify a legitimate rental company before paying.
What Our Fees Look Like, and What to Ask Any Company
Booking direct is step one.
Knowing what "direct" actually costs is step two.
Grant's warning here is aimed at our own industry as much as the large marketplaces:
"Make sure you double check the fees your rental company is charging, because there are some newer rental companies charging significant booking fees on top. Those things add up and can be hundreds and hundreds and sometimes a thousand plus dollars."
Grant Fritschle, Owner and Broker, Central Reservations
So ask any company you are considering, including us:
What is my final total, with every required fee included?
Then compare totals.
A lower advertised nightly rate does not automatically mean a cheaper reservation.
And we do not want to pretend "book direct" means there are no other charges.
Taxes still apply. Property-specific charges may apply. Optional protections or services may apply. Central Reservations also imposes a 3% surcharge on credit-card transactions. We do not surcharge debit-card payments.
That belongs in the comparison.
Transparency works both ways.
Free rewards with direct bookings
Direct Central Reservations bookings also include our guest rewards program.
Guests can choose up to 10 free rewards per reservation from a rotating lineup of local restaurants, attractions, golf, watersports, entertainment, and other Ocean City experiences.
The point is not that a voucher should decide where you book.
The point is that when two booking options are otherwise comparable, the extras are part of the real value too.
Rewards should be ordered before arrival, and current selections and redemption instructions should always be confirmed when you book.
The Cancellation Policy That Makes Early Booking Easier
Everything above creates a natural tension.
The best property selection comes from booking early.
The best last-minute price sometimes comes from waiting.
So what happens if you book early and your plans change?
Central Reservations' current Worry-Free 14-Day Cancellation works in three tiers:
- 14 or more days before arrival: full refund.
- 7 to 13 days before arrival: 50% refund, unless the property is rebooked.
- 0 to 6 days before arrival: no refund, unless the property is rebooked.
Always review the current published policy when you reserve because booking terms can change.
Grant's framing:
"Pre-booking the property, if you know what week and what property you want, is the best advice I can give every single guest. It is less stress and less anxiety. If that owner relists next year and changes their prices, or if somebody else books before you do, you are stuck with a property that is not as nice or as convenient.
What most guests do not understand is that our cancellation policy lets them do that safely. Lock up the location you want, the unit you want, the building you want, the week you want. Protect it, and know you are still covered."
Grant Fritschle, Owner and Broker, Central Reservations
The strategy is not complicated.
If you know the property and week you want, protect the selection early.
Just understand the cancellation window before you do it.
It Is September. What Should You Do About Next Summer?
This is the timely part.
If you already know when you want to come next summer, start looking now.
Our next-summer calendar generally begins opening for new reservations during September and October.
That is when property selection is strongest.
The best combinations of building, unit, bedroom count, view, location, and week tend to disappear first because there are only so many of them.
Waiting for a last-minute summer deal is a legitimate strategy.
But understand what you are trading.
You are trading selection for the possibility of a lower price.
If your family can say, "Any two-bedroom somewhere in Midtown will work," you can take that gamble.
If the family says, "We need this building, this week, three bedrooms, oceanfront, and enough parking for everyone," book when the calendar opens.
Call us at 410-723-4111 and ask when the dates you want become available.
What Most Guests Get Wrong About Saving Money
Saving money on an Ocean City vacation does not mean choosing the cheapest option every time.
It means paying for the things you actually value and not paying unnecessarily for the things you do not.
Here are the mistakes we see most often.
Comparing nightly rates instead of final totals
A $250 nightly rate can cost more than a $275 nightly rate once booking fees and other charges are added.
Compare the all-in number.
Assuming the cheapest season is automatically the best value
January is cheaper than September.
September may still be the better value if what you actually want is warm water, restaurants, events, and beach weather.
Cheap and valuable are not synonyms.
Waiting for a last-minute deal when the property matters more than the price
Last-minute works when you are flexible.
It works badly when you need a specific building, view, week, bedroom count, or group setup.
Do not save $200 and end up with the wrong vacation.
Paying for oceanfront when you will barely use the beach
Direct oceanfront can absolutely be worth it in July.
It may matter less on a November weekend built around restaurants, golf, shopping, Assateague, and Winterfest.
Match the property to the trip.
Assuming a marketplace is automatically the cheapest place to book
Marketplace search tools are useful.
Use them.
Then identify the professional manager and check the direct total before you pay.
Ignoring cancellation terms
Price matters until your plans change.
Then cancellation terms matter more.
A cheap nonrefundable booking can become the most expensive booking on the page.
Ignoring payment-method charges
Central Reservations charges 3% on credit-card transactions and does not surcharge debit-card transactions.
That is part of your final number.
Ask other companies the same question.
Paying to park downtown over and over
There are easier alternatives, especially if you are staying outside the Boardwalk area.
Which brings us to the next section.
Where Guests Overspend Once They Are Here
Timing and booking fees are the big two.
Once guests arrive, parking is one of the most common avoidable expenses Grant hears about.
If you drive downtown several nights during the same week and pay to park every time, that expense adds up quickly.
As of September 2026, the Coastal Highway Beach Bus costs $4 for a Ride-All-Day pass and runs along the island. The West Ocean City Park & Ride bus is free on most ordinary operating days, with fares applying on designated special-event dates.
Check the Town's current transportation schedule before you go because service frequency changes with the season and special events.
Rideshare can also make sense for a group that would otherwise pay to park several times.
Beyond that, "overspending" becomes personal.
Grant's own view is that he eats out a lot when he is on vacation and is completely fine with it.
Why?
Because that is part of his vacation.
If eating out every night is one of the things your family actually values, that is not necessarily overspending.
Budget for it.
Saving money should make the trip better, not turn the entire vacation into an exercise in avoiding anything fun.
FAQ: Cost and Value in Ocean City MD
When is the cheapest time to visit Ocean City MD?
Winter, particularly January through early March, generally has the lowest vacation-rental rates. Spring and fall usually cost less than peak summer while giving visitors more restaurants, events, attractions, and warmer weather.
What is the best value time to visit Ocean City?
Spring and fall are often the best value. You can get stronger property selection and more of the Ocean City experience for less than peak summer. Last-minute summer deals can also be good value if you are flexible about the exact property and dates.
Is it cheaper to stay in Ocean City during the week?
Often, yes. Midweek stays can cost less than weekend-heavy stays, especially when demand is concentrated around Friday and Saturday nights. Exact pricing varies by property, week, and season.
How much does Vrbo charge guests in service fees?
Vrbo says its traveler service fee is calculated as a percentage of the reservation amount and that the percentage varies by reservation. Industry vacation-rental sources commonly cite roughly 6% to 15% as a guideline, but Vrbo does not currently publish that range as a fixed rate. Check the price breakdown for the exact fee on your reservation.
Is it cheaper to book direct than through Vrbo or Airbnb?
It can be. The safest way to know is to compare the same property and dates using the final, all-in total. If a professional vacation-rental company manages the property, search the company name and compare its direct website price with the marketplace price.
How do I find out who manages a Vrbo rental?
Look for the host or property-manager name on the listing. If it is a company, search that exact name, go to the verified company website, find the same property, and compare the total price and terms.
Does Central Reservations charge a booking fee?
Compare the final quote rather than assuming every charge works like a marketplace fee. Central Reservations does impose a 3% surcharge on credit-card transactions and does not surcharge debit-card payments. Property-specific charges, taxes, and optional products may also apply.
What is Central Reservations' cancellation policy?
Our Worry-Free 14-Day Cancellation provides a full refund when cancelling 14 or more days before arrival. Cancellations 7 to 13 days before arrival receive a 50% refund unless the property is rebooked. Cancellations 0 to 6 days before arrival receive no refund unless the property is rebooked. Always review the current published policy when reserving.
When should I book an Ocean City rental for next summer?
If property selection matters, start in the fall. Central Reservations' next-summer availability generally begins opening during September and October. Waiting may produce a last-minute deal, but you trade selection for price.
What rewards do I get for booking direct with Central Reservations?
Direct bookings qualify for our free guest rewards program, with guests able to choose up to 10 rewards per reservation from current participating restaurants, attractions, golf, watersports, and other local offers.
How can I avoid overpaying for parking in Ocean City?
Consider public transportation instead of paying to park downtown repeatedly. As of September 2026, Ocean City's Coastal Highway Beach Bus offers a $4 Ride-All-Day pass. Check the Town's current schedule and Park & Ride information before your trip.
How We Know This
This guide combines three kinds of information.
First, Central Reservations' own experience.
We have been family-owned and locally operated in Ocean City since 1978 and manage nearly 400 vacation rentals across town. We see when guests book, what they ask about, what causes them to hesitate, what properties disappear first, and where misunderstandings about pricing and fees happen.
Second, our current booking policies and programs.
The cancellation terms, credit-card surcharge, debit-card policy, rewards program, and fall calendar-opening guidance in this article reflect Central Reservations' current policies and operating practices as of September 2026.
Third, outside authoritative sources.
Vrbo's official help center confirms that its traveler service fee is percentage-based and varies by reservation amount. The roughly 6% to 15% range cited here is presented as an industry guideline, not a fixed rate published by Vrbo.
Ocean City's official transportation information is the source for the current $4 Coastal Highway Beach Bus fare and Park & Ride guidance.
Pricing, availability, platform fees, transportation fares, rewards, cancellation terms, and business policies can change. Confirm current details before relying on any specific price or term.
